Protect Fast Food Employees from Painful Burns

Too many fast food employees are suffering from painful—even disfiguring—burns on the job. It's not hard to protect us from these burns. We're calling on fast food employers in midtown Manhattan to provide us with basic safety equipment like gloves and heat resistant sleeves.

Why is this important?

No one should get hurt on the job, but I’ve been burned three times since I started working at KFC in Manhattan six months ago. When I let my manger know what happened, he didn’t show any concern for my health, he just told me to be more careful and keep working.

Getting burned hurts, but what’s worse than the scars on my hands and arms, is that nothing has been done to make my restaurant safer. Like fast food workers across the city, we’re at risk of getting burned every day, and it’s time for that to change.

Our employers don’t give us the equipment we need to stay safe at work. Like at my KFC, we have to lift scalding hot metal trays that have been in the fryer, but we don’t have gloves and heat resistant sleeves we need to protect our arms. These are basic, inexpensive things that we should have at work. That’s why we’re calling on our employer to start making sure we have the gear we need to do our job safely. I'm tired of getting burned by fast food.

I joined with hundreds of other fast food workers and went on strike last November for $15/hour and the right to form a union without intimidation. Through the Fast Food Forward campaign, workers are standing up to improve their lives and kick start the city’s economy. Check out #burnedbyfastfood on Instagram and Twitter.
