VICPOL: We deserve a seat at the table

At a meeting with union delegates, VicPol’s Licensing and Regulation Division (LRD) agreed to ongoing and formal consultation with union members. It comes after almost 400 people signed our petition calling for a seat at the table. This massive win means security union members can have a say about our licenses, report dodgy contractors, and set a real professional standard for our industry.

We let VicPol know there is strong support for guards to be listened to on licensing and regulation. And they agreed! They have set up formal consultation so we can have a voice in the issues that impact us every day in our work.

Other wins included an annual meeting with our union’s full Security Industry Council. VicPol will also set up systems for union members to report non-compliant contractors directly to them.

We, as security license holders, are calling on Victoria Police's Licensing and Regulation Division (LRD) to commit to formal and ongoing consultation between the LRD and delegates of United Voice to ensure best practice in license issues such as investigations, compliance, costs, training and more.
By working together, union security officers and the LRD can build the security sector to be the professional and high standard industry that we and the public deserve.

Why is this important?

By working together, union security officers and the LRD can ensure the security industry has the professional standards the public expect and deserve.
I know that because I've been a security officer for over 20 years. My name's Dave, and I'm also a delegate with my security union, United Voice.
In the 20 years I've been working, our security license fees have increased and we also have to do more training to keep our licenses.
But even with the extra costs to officers, there’s not enough in place to make sure everyone complies with licensing regulations.
It’s risky for us to work with people who don’t know what they’re doing. I've worked places where I know the people I'm relying on don’t have the correct license, but I've had to pay to keep my own up to date.
The decisions made by the LRD affect every security officer, it doesn't matter if you work at the airport, in private security or federal defence.
But we don’t have a seat at the table where decisions are made.
And we’re the ones who have on-the-ground experience. We are the experts on the impact of LRD decisions, on such matters as business compliance, training, and costs.
We can’t do our jobs without our security licenses, so we should have a seat at the table where the decisions are made. We are standing up for a safe, professional industry with decent jobs and good pay – that’s why we've joined together in our union, United Voice.
And that’s why we need to have a say in licensing and regulation of our industry. Please sign the petition for a say in the licensing and regulation requirements for all security officers.
