Remove the Mural! Respect our Community! Boycott Unincorporated!

This campaign has ended.

UPDATE: The mural has come down. After months of using proper channels to protest - Town Council, vigils in front of the business, writing to elected representatives, the owners continued to dig their heals in, but the community kept pushing back. When someone unknown grafitti'd over the mural, the owners had it fixed. Another person whose PTSD was triggered by the images took a white paint roller to the mural one night, and that finally resulted in county graffitti control coming in and taking the images down. We are thankful for the result - and disappointed in community members who refused to empathize with those of us who found it offensive or traumatizing - but thrilled to have created more listening and caring a community amongst those of us who joined forces. Thank you to all of you who helped in this fight - and together, we won! Great work!

=====

We, the neighbors, coffee-lovers, and friends of NW Altadena, commit to boycotting your establishment until you remove the mural from the Lincoln-facing wall.

Neighbors have spoken in multiple public forums about how the negative images of black figures with knives choking and stabbing each other is traumatizing and inappropriate for the neighborhood.

You have responded by saying that surely we are "mature enough" to "handle" what comes up from this art. We are. And that's why we have asked it be removed - that this space is inappropriate for it and that it belongs in a gallery. Are you mature enough to honor the heartfelt testimony of those who live and drive near it?

We believe if you truly value your neighbors and the community you would be moved and make a change. Please make the change. Until then, we, the undersigned, commit to boycotting your establishment.

Why is this important?

Unincorporated is a newer coffee house in NW Altadena that has generally been welcomed by the neighborhood. A recent mural installation on the wall of the store has resulted in a community angered by images that for many portray violent black figures, stabbing and choking each other. When the community spoke up to request its removal, the owners doubled down, insisting the community was "mature enough" to deal with the conversations raised by the artwork.

An historically Black working-class neighborhood with significant Japanese and Latino residents as well, NW Altadena is experiencing extreme pressures from gentrification that is damaging longtime communities. By not listening to the voices of long time residents who are traumatized by the artwork, Unincorporated has become the wrong kind of neighbor in our changing neighborhood.

With County and Town officials saying that it is out of their control, the community is left with no other choice - and we - neighbors, community members, and supporters, ask you to join us in boycotting the coffeehouse with us until the change is made.

For important context, this YouTube video which includes moving testimony of neighbors who have asked for the removal of the mural. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WU32IYkmgh4&t=5982s This issue starts at 1:39:42: first hear the Altadena Town Councilmember give context to his follow-up on the issue, followed by testimony of neighbors.

Please join us in our boycott, and sign our petition.

Reaching out to the signers of this petition with another super local West Altadena issue: the pickle-ball court the County is planning to put into Charles White park. While the original plan for the park update included a Basketball Court, that has now become a pickleball court. There are no public Basketball Courts in walking distance in West Altadena and many in the community prefer it. In addition, Basketball courts can accomodate pickle-ball, but not the other way around. Hoping you will sign this petition and pass it around! https://www.coworker.org/p/basketball-in-charleswhite
