Justice for George Mason University Campus Workers

We, the concerned community and alum of George Mason University, want the university to adopt a 'responsible contracting' policy similar, to Georgetown's 'Just Employment' policy. We want GMU to stop taking our tax and tuition money to contract with companies that pay low wages and poor working conditions. Their janitorial staff are forced to come to work after being exposed to COVID, they are shorted on hours and intimidated. On construction projects, the contractors use labor brokers that violate labor laws.

Why is this important?

Our tax and tuition dollars are driving poverty for immigrant workers at George Mason University. The university should pay people a decent wage and have high standards for all contractors. Their janitorial staff are forced to come to work after being exposed to COVID, they are shorted on hours and intimidated. On construction projects, the contractors use labor brokers that violate labor laws. We want GMU to adopt a strong responsible contractor policy. We want the new Virginia Square campus in Arlington to be built by union workers who have more job protections, and have apprenticeship opportunities for people in our community.

Reasons for signing

  • The University should conduct a review and commit to ethical and proactive COVID-19 protection procedures. Non-union shops must demonstrate best practices and the University must look at the benefits of union contracts regarding knowledge and safety. All companies need to look at construction safety as a priority for labor, students, and, staff. Example: Philadelphia, PA building collapse. Horrific injuries and managers found criminally responsible.
  • No company especially a university should mistreat and cheat workers. You are teaching justice and fairness in your classes. Practice it for workers.
  • A public, state university that calls itself an institution of higher education should set the standard for the equal and just treatment of all employees
