PruittHealth: Protect Residents and Workers at your facilities!

We, the workers at PruittHealth - Carolina point in Durham, NC, demand protections for ourselves and our residents, at all PruittHealth facilities, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since the beginning of the spread of the virus, our facility, like many others, has been hit hard with positive cases of COVID-19. So far, there have been 87 residents who have tested positive along with 25 staff members and 20 resident deaths!

In order to prevent more loss and sickness, and ensure that we are compensated fairly for being essential workers in this time, we demand:

1. More than 1 gown a day if gown becomes soiled

2. One new mask/day

3. A steady supply of gloves to change when soiled

4. Enhanced sanitation, including the use of an air filtering system to protect residents in transit.

5. Premium pay for all frontline staff at 1.5 x their regular rate

Why is this important?

Our chairman and chief executive Neil Pruitt was quoted as saying “I cannot think of one thing we could have done differently,” when responding to the outbreak. We think there is so much more to be done. Right now, we are tasked with keeping our residents safe from harm while being overworked, under resourced, and underpaid.

We are the frontline staff at Carolina Point and we don’t feel safe going to work while a pandemic is happening outside and a major outbreak is occurring inside. We are entrusted to give the highest quality of care to our elderly residents and cannot do so with the current realities on the job. For the protection of our residents and ourselves, we are asking for adequate PPE, better sanitation, and much needed hazard pay!

Pruitt Health- Carolina Point must continue to show a commitment to the families that put their loved ones in our care. We will honor family member’s wishes to keep their loved ones safe, and urge Pruitt Health- Carolina Point and other facilities to do the same by responding with urgency to our asks!
