SPEAK UP AGAINST RACISM. SUPPORT YOUR WORKERS

On Friday, April 27th, 2018 Chili’s Grill and Bar server, Jamese Adams, found a guest credit card receipt with the words “I don’t tip N(words)” written at the top of the receipt with no gratuity written into the tip line. Initially- she was shocked and very hurt by the racial slur, but after realizing how very disturbing the situation was- she posted a copy of the receipt (confidential information censored) to her social media page. She wanted her friends, family, and co-workers to know that this was wrong and that it is never ok to insult a human being in this way.

Within 24 hours, Jamese’s post went viral and Chili’s management asked her to remove the post citing a “violation of their social media policy.”

Corporate managers proceeded to call, text and speak personally with her to ensure that she was staying silent on the matter. Instead of supporting Jamese by releasing a public statement condemning the racist remark, they focused on trying to avoid a public relations nightmare. Unfortunately, this INACTION is standard operating procedure in corporate restaurants and the workers are typically the victim throughout the ordeal.

Chili’s Grill and Bar Opry Mills needs to take a stand and speak out against intolerable acts of cruelty against their staff. Do the right thing, Chili’s Grill & Bar, Opry Mills Mall. SPEAK UP about this issue. STOP SILENCING YOUR STAFF. Take a stand, make a comment that shows your workers that you support a safe and professional working environment.

Why is this important?

Silencing your staff when they are mistreated by guests is cowardly and unethical. This happens all too often in the restaurant industry. Leadership is essential in making a difference in your employees’ lives.
Do what’s right and PUBLICLY SUPPORT your staff in matters of social injustice.
